Friday Floetry x 7/19/07

Well, this week's Floetry won't be accompanied by any verbiage from me. Not because I was requested not to, but simply because I think the words speak for themselves and more importantly I don't feel like describing either artist any further.

Floetry:

Gotta watch er' move 'cuz them eyes be on you (eyes be on you)
Gotta drive real cool when them pies be on you (pies be on you)
Just because we stack paper and we ball outrageous (ball outrageous)
Them alphabet boys gotta us under survalence (Ayy)
(Like animals) They lock us in cages
The same ni**a that's a star when you put 'em on stages
I aint cheat--played the hand I was dealt
Tried to tax the grand pearl when I got it myself
(Let's Get It) No nuts, no glory (no glory)
My biography, you damn right, the true story (Yeah)
Set the city on fire, and I didn't even try (try)
Run these streets all day, I can sleep when I die (Ayy)

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix - movie review

Overall, this was an enjoyable movie, but it suffered from the same problems as similar types of movies, including Star Wars: Episode II and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Namely, although there was a specific plot in this movie, the movie itself just served to move along the overarching plotline. If you watch any serial drama tv show (such as 24, Smallville, Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, Jericho, Lost, etc.), each season has an overall theme. The season premiere or an early episode will set up a villain or event and the whole season is used to lead up to the final showdown between the good guys and the bad guy or to prevent the event. Each episode will generally have its own plot, but there will be discussions or glimpses of that season finale. There are also certain episodes that do nothing but set up the final showdown. Harry Potter 5 was this episode. Potter 1 introduced us to the world. Potters 2 and 3 gave us a little more background and showing the kids grow up. Potter 4 (so far my favorite) was the Tri-Wizard tournament and gave us our first glimpse of He Who Shall Not Be Named. Potter 5 seemed to be nothing more than giving us an introduction of who the key players will be for the final showdown of good versus evil that will play out in the Potter 7 that hits bookstores tomorrow night (no, I have never read a single page).

Other than my issue above where this movie just felt like a placeholder, my main problems were evidently answered in the book itself. There were a number of scenes where something happened that felt like it came out of nowhere. If I were literate (and had the time), I would read Potter 5 to help me fill in some of the blanks. This movie continued the theme and it is getting darker and more adult, which is the natural progression of the story. Overall, this was a very good movie and a necessity if you have enjoyed any of the previous Potter films or plan on seeing one of the final two.

4.5 out of 6 beers.

Movies You Should Have Seen By Now #3

Usually a Monday feature, but better late than never. Today's movie you should have seen before is Old School. This is the movie that, in my opinion, created the moniker "Frat Pack" that includes Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Luke and Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller (and supposedly, Steve Carell and Jack Black, but I don't normally include them). The story revolves around Luke Wilson as a real estate attorney, who broke up with his girlfriend after finding out that she has been participating in certain extracurricular activities with random people (at the same time). He moves into a house just off-campus and he and his two best friends throws a huge party, only to be threatened to be evicted by the Dean of Students the following morning. The answer is to start a fraternity with both students and the general population, including extremely old Joseph "Blue" Pulaski. The movie follows the wacky adventures of the fraternity, including a KY jelly wrestling match, cameos by Snoop Dogg and the "Ragin Cajun" James Carville and delivering the bids to the pledges with Master of Puppets blasting in the background. One of the main reasons you should have seen this movie is to be able to understand the references when someone says "Frank the Tank," "You're my boy, Blue" "Earmuffs" and "We're going streaking."

One of, if not the greatest comedy to come out of the new millenium. If you've seen it, go watch it again and if you haven't, rent it this weekend and enjoy!
