Brown Sugar x Weekend Review

My drinks are still pinker than the Easter rabbit.

Well, I’ve been told by Powdered Sugar that some people email her if she hasn’t posted her Weekend Review by a certain time on Monday. So, please don’t hate, but I promised (although a “promise” after several vodka cranberries and various other concoctions is probably less “sealed in blood” than other promises I might make) that we could do a “remix” this week where I would try my hand at a Weekend Review while she kicked out some dope Friday Floetry (I hope its dope, but I guess we’ll find out in 4 days).

I’ve been either out of town or entertaining older family members while in town the past couple of months (basically in-town entertainment during August and some of September consisted of a nice dinner with several drinks or several drinks followed by more drinks with dinner). Thus, I decided that I would not go too crazy each night during one of my first “free” weekends in H-town in a while. So while Friday was a late one, Saturday was not. This coming weekend might be a little crazier as it’s around the birthdays of three of my boys here in H-town.

On Friday, a handful of us met at my place and enjoyed some beer, vodka/oj, and Patron. Then feeling a little buzzed, or at least not sober, we checked out Onion Creek. I’ve never been there and have heard a lot about it, so I was pretty excited when Jud suggested it. It was pretty hot outside, so we spent about 5 minutes going from one outdoor table to another outdoor table to sitting near the inside bar where it was a little cooler. I had some wine and shared some of the famous Onion Creek “mini-pizzas”. They were good, but after sharing some of the BBQ hamburger, I can’t give as great a review for that beef product. People suggested Onion Creek has an “Austin-feel”. I haven’t been to Austin enough to appreciate exactly what that means, but I assume its sort of a laid-back and chill vibe. While drinking there, Jud suggested going to Kobains, another place I hadn’t been too.

In the meantime, Powdered Sugar contacted Jud and by coincidence, she said her crew was going to Kobains but was at Cahill’s at the moment. So, after finishing up at the “O.C.” we headed to Cahill’s. Never been there either, but I can best describe it as a casual neighborhood bar. There I had a couple of my favorite grey goose and cranberries and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the place. That’s also where I agreed with Powdered Sugar to write this column, which I am regretting now since I don’t really know how to make it sound exciting enough to third-parties (maybe because it was more of a chill night or maybe because it takes special talent to do an exciting Weekend Review on a weekly basis). From there we all went to Kobains and met up several more people there. Kobains was bigger than Cahill’s overall and had a big outdoor area with tables.

We were able to get a table and that definitely gave me a better impression of the place. By the time we got to Kobains I was feeling pretty good, so if we didn’t have a table and if there wasn’t some place to dance inside I would have probably gotten a little annoyed if I just had to stand by the bar and wait for drinks only to stand near the bar thereafter. That place seemed pretty chill and laid-back too and generally crowded which seemed like a good thing at the moment. I didn’t really explore enough of the inside to see if there was any sort of dancing area or “makeshift” dancing area.

While there, I saw someone I thought had gone to school with Jud and I. I sort of fumbled through that conversation, searched for my phone (to get their number/email address) while patting myself down in what must have appeared as some strange drunken dance (I had left the phone at the table). After several drinks at Kobains, the Yellow Knight showed up and several of us went for a "late night” snack at La Tapatia. I definitely recommend this place, and I also like Late Night Pie, Katz’s, and Jack in the Box. Either way I probably go to Late Night Pie or La Tapatia the most.

On Saturday, even though several people invited me to do some sort of similar late night thing again, I just chilled out/recovered and then went over to a friend’s house to eat some dinner and watch a movie. If I had been less exhausted (or less inclined to lay in bed or on a soft couch), I probably would have sat out by a pool on Saturday. I also think on Friday night/Saturday early morning I invited several people to come and have champagne at the pool on Saturday, but yeah I couldn’t get up for that…

On Sunday, Jud, I and another person (I can’t think of a nickname on the fly) hit up the FOX Sports Grill in the Galleria for some early football action including a winning Texans game. Food was good, and I really like the atmosphere although the TVs can be a little harder to see than at some other places. In case you were curious, all I drank there was lemonade. Several times I tried to convince others to set a new standard by drinking when I wasn’t, but to no avail (aside from food and your typical bar drinks, FOX does offer a "make your own Bloody Mary" station and all-you-can-drink mimosas during certain hours).

Overall fun weekend, and a good slower paced way to get back into the “doing 20-something sorts of stuff in H-town” scene. I guess that's sort of the scene generally going on in The Heights right now. Well, that’s my weekend review. Hope Powdered Sugar and Jud aren’t regretting this decision too much, and I’m excited to see another interpretation of Friday Floetry.
