NFL Draft Review
A quick review of the NFL Draft developments from this past weekend. Because I was moving into my new house, I could not dedicate my weekend to watching the Draft as I do every year. Thus, each of these remarks were not sullied or in any way impacted by the talking heads on the ESPN family of networks. These are entirely my knee-jerk reactions from watching many of these players in college only (and I don't care what happens at the NFL combine).
Here it goes:
The Texans got steals in the 2nd round with DeMeco Ryans and in the 3rd with Eric Winston. I still don't know what to think about Mario Williams. In a way, I feel bad for the kid because even if he is a pro-bowler for the next 10 years, so long as Bush isn't a flash in the pan, the Texans will always always be asking "what if".
NYJ had probably the best draft, especially the 4th round getting Brad Smith and Leon Washington, assuming Smith makes the transition from QB to WR. Leon was underutilized at Florida State, but could be a good pro.
Arizona got lucky getting Leinart. Dennis Green knows how to teach quarterbacks and with
Fitzgerald and Boldin, plus Edgerrin (and mentoring from Warner), plus by falling in the draft and going to the Cards, the expectations are about as low for a first round pick as you will ever see. Leinart is the real winner (though not in his wallet) and he couldn't have asked for a better situation. I just hope this doesn't affect future underclassman who would be better served staying in school and getting their degree rather than leave early for the draft.
Atlanta still needs wide receivers for Vick, though Norwood is a solid RB.
Baltimore's draft will be completed when they get McNair from the Titans. The P.J. Daniels pick was a good one.
Buffalo screwed up again in the 1st, but got some solid secondary help with Youboty and Simpson.
Carolina should be in the NFC title game this year with DeAngelo Williams.
Chicago - Hester could be amazing, especially in kick and punt return duties and being a general threat likw Randle El (sans throwing the ball)
Cincinnati, Cleveland - don't know much about the draftees
Dallas - good enough, especially if T.O. is happy
Denver - like the Javon Walker trade and love the Elvis Dumervil steal in the 4th. I still don't know about Cutler.
Detroit - FIRE MILLEN!!!
Green Bay - A.J. Hawk needs a haircut
Indy - Addai should be good, but lets be honest - as long as Peyton is throwing the ball, holes will open up for the rb - I just hope Addai can catch
JAX - love the Lewis pick and Drew should be a nice change of pace back when Fred Taylor gets injured
KC - not a huge fan of Brodie Croyle and don't know much about the others
Miami, Minnesota - don't know much
NE - Maroney and Jackson are great picks, but Mills from Tulsa is going to be huge
NO - If they can keep both Bush and Duece and now that they have a guy with a brain playing qb, they can make noise in the NFC south - they did sleep walk through the rest of the draft however
NYG - Sinorice Moss will be a great addition (do they still have Toomer?) - nice receiving corps of Burress, Toomer, Moss and Shockey and Tiki
Oakland - ?? - needed qb and rb to complement receivers
Philly - They still suck and desperately needed offensive help
Pitt - decent overall - Santonio should be a nice complement to Ward
San Diego - If Cromartie is healthy, he will be a big-timer
San Fran - Vernon Davis is a great pick and Michael Robinson is an X-Factor
Seattle - not enough to get back to Super Bowl
St. Louis - ???
TB - Gradkowski can be good, Stovall could be great and Massaquoi could be huge
Tennessee - They had to draft Young, White was a steal and Orr will complement Bennett and Calico well
Washington - Who cares?
