Glory Road - movie review

It has been awhile since I saw this movie, but I just haven't had the time to sit down and write my review. Further, this movie is somewhat tough to review because although the team portrayed in the movie (Texas Western, now known as University of Texas-El Paso) was different, the content of the movie is similar to so many others, namely Remember the Titans and Miracle - new head coach has his own ideas, picks players that don't get along because of race (or hometown in the case of Miracle), team survives trials and tribulations to win the championship, etc. I knew some information regarding the Mighty Miners 1965-66 season, but not in this much detail. The internal and external struggles the team went through were fairly complex and treated with much care from new director James Gartner. The casting was solid for what it was and the acting sufficient, name Josh Lucas as head coach Don Haskins. However, the best part of the movie for me was during the end credits when they used real interviews with participants in the championship game, including Haskins himself, Texas Western players and current Miami Heat head coach Pat Riley, who was on the Kentucky team that lost. One of the things that I learned while watching this movie was that it was not until the championship game when Haskins utilized an entire African-American lineup.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable movie, especially if you enjoy historical sports movies.
