Statistics Run Amok

I was at the Astros-Cardinals game today at Minute Maid Park and during the bottom of the ninth, Orlando Palmeiro was called upon to pinch hit. As per usual, the scoreboard gives an interesting factoid about the player. Generally, it will say what the batter's career batting average is against a team or pitcher, etc. But today, I saw a statistic that was so ridiculously that even I, a guy who used to analyze the stats on the back of the baseball cards I used to collect, was shocked. The stat was as follows:

Palmeiro has the third fewest misses per swing in his career (7.7%), behind David Eckstein and Juan Pierre.

I mean, come on, that is ridiculous.

Season Finales (Contains Spoilers for CSI MIami, NCIS, 24, Lost, and Alias)

Wow!! So I finally finished watching the season finales of CSI Miami, NCIS, 24, Lost, and Alias(haven't finished Smallville, the OC or CSI: Vegas as I was unable to record them while I was moving) and all I have to say is Holy S#*t. First, CSI Miami revealed what had been anticipated over the previous few weeks that Horatio's brother was alive. I really don't have any comment on this except we may lose Emily Proctor's character next season (thus, we need a new hot chick with brains to be added).

On NCIS, the unexpected really happened as they killed off one of the main characters (if you want or need to know who, throw a post on the chatterbox to the left). I can't believe they did this, especially considering that my enjoyment of this show stems from the playful banter between its many main characters. The show ended with a bit of a cliffhanger, but that may be due to the fact that my recording may or may not have cut off early.

24 ... Jack Bauer kicking all kinds of ass and avoided an assassination attempt by his own government to avoid him implicating their involvement in the assault on the Chinese Embassy!! Nuff said. Next season is going to be fun.

Finally, HUGE PROPS to JJ Abrams and the writers of both Lost and Alias. On Lost, we are left with almost no answers to the major questions we have been asking all season. First, will Michael and the rafters get help? Well, the raft did set sail, but was overtaken (and destroyed) by either "pirates" or "the others" and young Walt was abducted. We now must ask WHY? Second, Locke et al were able to open the hatch (despite big man Hurley finding the numbers on it and trying to stop them), but the closing shot of a set of stairs heading down into a darkened "well" did not answer, WHAT THE HELL IS IN THE FRICKIN HATCH???? Next, we find out who attempted to steal Claire's baby, but that point became moot when Charlie and Sayid got the baby back. Again, why did the palm reader, in an earlier episode, freak out over Claire's baby??? Finally, we find out that the monster is a sort of security system and it began to sound a lot more mechanical. But, please tell us what the hell it is. GREAT EPISODE and I could not have figured out a better way to end the first season.

Alias -- Sydney's mother is alive, Sloane goes from good to bad to good, an apocalypse is averted, and the last 2 minutes were probably the most surprising in television this season. Who is Michael Vaughn, how was he the one to first talk to Syd about SD-6 and of course, are the two main characters still alive. Note to JJ and the writers - Weiss and Marshall are the two best characters on the show. Keep them involved as much as possible next season.

I may or may not write about the other shows, but regardless, I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE FALL SEASON (except for Thursday nights at 7pm Central when not one, not two, but three of my favorite shows are on at the same time). Here's hoping that one network comes to their senses and moves either The O.C., Smallville or Alias out of that timeslot.

Random Musing

Why is it that when you have work to do and the television is on in the background, you find the most inane programming on and yet you can't seem to turn away from it causing you to work really slowly?
